Ortho-Bionomy Advanced Course
July 14th, 2008
This course is open to all who have completed at least 1 of the Ortho-Bionomy Basic courses, the Spine or The Extremities, called Phase 4.
In the Advanced course, we introduce more subtle and energetic aspects of the work that induce spontaneous healing through contact with the innate wisdom of the body, allowing the client’s own self correction reflexes to be activated. But not by us as in Phase 4 movements that the practitioner generates, but by the client who generates their own motions unconsciously as we observe, encourage and follow their lead. This is phase 5.
The principles taught in phase 5 are expanded into the electromagnetic field of the client, where energetic contact is made and the client self corrects their own aura. This results in physical as well as energetic corrections as the innate healing consciousness of the client comes forward while the practitioner steps back to allow it space to grow. (phase 6). The concepts of the yogic chakras are introduced with their balancing through phase 6.
The Advanced work addresses the psychic, mental, emotional and spiritual overlay to the client’s physical discomfort, thus facilitating holistic healing to their “physical” issues.
Chapman's Lymphatic Drainage Reflexes
July 14th, 2008
The lymphatic system, by draining all body tissues of metabolic waste, dead cells, foreign microbes and other debris must be functioning at its optimum to insure fast recovery from inflammation, infection or trauma to those tissues. Within the lymphatic system also lies the immune system which can be stimulated to enhance resistance to infection.
The Chapman’s Reflexes are specific points located on the front and back of the body that when stimulated induce lymphatic drainage of various lymphatic vessel beds. By stimulating these points, each specific for a different organ or part of the body, you can greatly enhance the self-generated recuperative powers of the immune system and speed recovery from various common maladies as colds, flu, headache, menstrual pain, sore throat, etc.
This course is offered by Ortho-Bionomy instructors as an adjunct to massage therapy practice. A textbook is included as part of the course with detailed illustrations showing the exact locations of all points.
Originally designed for the Osteopathic profession by Frank and J.B.Chapman, Osteopaths who practiced in the early 1900’s, these reflexes were virtually ignored by most of that profession and taken up again in the 1970’s by Chiropractors and massage therapists learning Touch for Health, where about 14 of the 125 reflexes are shown as Neurolymphatics.
Arthur Lincoln Pauls, D.O., founder of Ortho-Bionomy® has reintroduced Chapman’s Reflexes in their complete form as part of the family of related disciplines to be taught to all Ortho-Bionomists to expand the therapeutic possibilities of gentle touch.
Ortho-Bionomy Basic Courses
July 14th, 2008
The purpose of the Ortho-Bionomy Basic Courses (Basic Spine and Basic Extremities) is to teach the participants how to induce spontaneous relaxation in the musculature and ligamenture of the spine, pelvis and extremities. This is effected by a series of very slow, pleasurable, simple movements always in the painfree direction, accompanied by breath relaxation techniques that create such an overwhelming safe experience for the client that they tend to relax not just their conscious control , but subconscious control over their structure. The innately self-corrective musculoskeletal reflexes are thus gently awakened and induced. The client restores their own structure back to as close to normal as they are able to. There are no contra-indications to its employment, even in the most severe cases of spinal pain/disease, testifying to its gentleness. Emphasis is on creating relationship with the client that makes the correction more of a dance/conversation that “happens”between them as opposed to a preconfigured plan by the practitioner.
The Spine Course includes the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, coccygeal and pelvic segments. Special attention is given to additional postural muscle releases, including the iliopsoas, piriformis, and quadratus lumborum.
The Extremities Course includes the release of the ribs, shoulder, including frozen shoulder, clavicle, scapula, elbow, wrist and fingers with emphasis on the tennis elbow and the carpal tunnel syndromes. In the lower extremities are included the hip sockets, knees, ankles, feet and toes with emphasis on knee sprains, sprained ankles , dropped metetarsal, longitudinal arches and the bunion correction.
Ortho-Bionomy Beginning Cranial Class
July 14th, 2008
The purpose of the Ortho-Bionmy Cranial Class for beginners is to introduce the anatomy/physiology regarding normal and abnormal cranial bone movement/stress and then approach any abnormality we find with phase 4 and 5 simple cranial fascial and muscular releases.
In the first part of the class, through a series of overheads we review the anatomy/physiology of the cranium and learn to palpate and assess cranial sutures and common trigger points.
The remainder of the class will be to practice Ortho-Bionomy on the Cranium on each other to experience releases ourselves and gain proficiency in the techniques of gentle motions with deep respiratory assist. The temporomandibular joint is stressed.
Homeopathy Class
July 14th, 2008
Just as we described Ortho-Bionomy as Homeopathy made physical, we could just as easily say Homeopathy is Ortho-Bionomy expressed chemically. While Ortho-Bionomy is done always with the minimum effort and least amount of movement, Homeopathy is done with the gentlest, minimum dose possible to effect it’s cures. Ortho-Bionomy recreates the subconscious muscular tension patterns that cause pain/restriction in order for them to dissolve. Homeopathy recreates the patterns of distorted vital-force that underlie diseases in order for them to dissolve.
It was Hippocrates. himself, the founder of Medicine, who said that the best remedy to give a sick person was a remedy that CAUSED a similar illness in a well person, (the law of similars). This is of course the definition of Homeopathy which was made into a distinct science through the discoveries of German pharmacist/physician Samuel Hahnemann, M.D. at the close of the 18th century.
The class in Homeopathy for Beginners, is open to anyone regardless of previous health background, will introduce the student to the following subjects and give them a firm basis to continue further study.
- History of the development of Homeopathy
- Principles and Practice of Homeopathy
- Natural Healing Philosophy of Homeopathy
- Treatment of common 1st aid and sports conditions
- How to use, store , administer, and handle Homeopathic remedies
- How to purchase Homeopathic remedies, books and charts.
- How to take and analyze a proper Homeopathic injury case.
The conditions with suitable remedies for which we will review include:
- Sprains/Strains
- Bruises, Fracture, Hemorrhage
- Burns and Scalds, Frostbite, Heat Stress
- Contusions, cuts, abrasions
- Insect bites/stings; animal bites; food poisoning
Homeopathy: Intermediate Level Class
July 14th, 2008
This class requires the Basic Homeopathic Class as a prerequisite, or previous experience with homeopathy and knowledge of the fundamentals of prescribing for first aid and injuries.
At the intermediate level we cover all the elements of acute illness case prescribing, including:
- case taking in depth for acute cases
- use of the materia medicas and repertories to make the homeopathic prescription including free online materia medicas.
- homeopathic methodology for seeing any any case through to completion
- how to determine the need to change remedies or potencies of the selected remedy
- how to manage difficult allopathically interfered with cases
- a list of excellent acute case prescribing texts, many of which are specific for regions of the body
Required texts are: Pointers to the Common Remedies by M.L.Tyler; Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Remedies by Dana Ullman
Holistic Nutrition
July 14th, 2008
The Holistic Nutrition Course is designed in 2 parts. Part one covers the basic biochemical scientific understanding of the basis of Nutrition including the makeup of the foodstuffs, vitamins and minerals.
Nutrition, however is not just WHAT is consumed, but HOW it is digested and ultimately ASSIMILATED and finally, UTILIZED, and metabolic residue PROCESSED (elimination). Therefore I cover how health is impacted , for better or worse, by not only what we consume, but also problems that may accompany the internal processes that occur after consumption to the end results of the complete nutritional metabolism.
Part 2 covers information, with hand-outs , of the dietetic procedures that are known to both prevent and help a wide variety of health complaints. Included will be protocols to help those suffering from arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, colitis, hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism and other nutritionally influenceable conditions.
The course is open to the general public and nothing taught is meant to claim any cures for diseases or discourage anyone from seeking appropriate medical care for proper diagnosis or treatment.
Ortho-Bionomy Self Help Class
July 14th, 2008
The Ortho-Bionomy Self-Help Course utilizes the principles and philosophy of Ortho-Bionomy to expand awareness of our inherent self-corrective natures. We will monitor internal trigger points while searching for the most comfortable posture that relieves them as this induces spontaneous release of tight muscles and ligaments. We will learn exercises that relax the cranium, spine, and extremities.
Of course, all of the procedures we learn to do to our own body can be taught to our clients as first aid measures until an appointment can be scheduled for complete care. Many of the procedures can then be taught to your clients as a way of helping them to progress between visits.
Besides the self-monitored releases and exercises will also be guided imagery to help us visualize our pain areas and send energetic relief.
This class is accompanied by the text, BALANCE THE CENTER, by Christy Frederich, certified Ortho-Bionomist. This text can be reviewed by visiting her website at www.balancethecenter.com.
Postures and Post Techniques
July 14th, 2008
POSTURES (ABNORMAL SPINAL CURVATURES)
This part of the course expands on the Basic course to review and address and even in some cases successfully treat, the abnormal spinal curvatures commonly encountered in massage therapy practice.
- Scoliosis Lateral spinal curvature has many causes and degrees of intensity. Many types can be helped with specific exercises developed by Ortho-Bionomy®. Both the spine and rib cage can be softened and reshaped to provide pain relief and increased range of motion .
- Kyphosis Abnormal posterior curvature in the thoracic spine commonly seen in the elderly can have the pain and disability eased through Ortho-Bionomy.
- Anterior dorsal Pinching in the thoracicis due to loss of the normal dorsal curve changes the client’s posture and retracts the scapulae.
- Posterior lumbar The abnormal straightening of the lumbar spine with loss of normal lordosis is for most clients an intractable low back pain with tension that is hard to relieve by any method. Ortho-Bionomy exercises can restore the proper curve, allowing for good response to other massage techniques.
POST TECHNIQUES
This part of the course expands the Basic Spinal and Basic Extremities courses by showing the specific sets of passive and active exercises used in Ortho-Bionomy for all spinal procedures and specific extremities. Included is how to use the special ISOMETRIC exercises designed by Arthur Lincoln Pauls, founder of O-B to assist in dramatic rehabilitation and remobilization of damaged or “frozen” joints. Indications for use of the Isometrics are:
- Pain remaining on motion after O-B treatment
- Restriction to motion remaining after O-B treatment
Ethics and Emotional Issues
July 14th, 2008

- Ways to support the client while not interfering or interacting/directing with the client.
- Techniques to support clients who may need assistance when emotions arise and recognize when they don’t need assistance.
- Common and not so common ethical dilemmas/situations that arise in practice and successful ways to deal with them.
- Client’s rights to privacy.
- The Ortho-Bionomy Code of Ethics for practitioners.
- Grounding methods useful in handling excessive energy discharges in clients.
- The Ortho-Bionomy Ground of Being——Where you come from within yourself in treatment that determines the outcomes.
- The well known concepts of Transference and Countertransference as they show up in practice and how to handle them.
- Owning your own experience—when you should disengage from the client and why.
- Dealing with how to start sessions, record keeping, and discharging clients.
- Dealing with adverse responses, or lack of success with clients.
- Refocusing the session when interferences happen.
- Common and not so common questions/challenges brought up by clients to your behavior/work
- The real meaning of the mantra, “Lord , make me an instrument, just not a tuba!”
